We all want to look fit, feel fit, and stay fit. It’s hard to accomplish it, and it’s even harder to lose weight.

There are probably many reasons why people are not losing weight and many people are gaining weight instead of losing it. The main reasons are that people are eating too much unhealthy food, too much junk food, and they are not exercising enough.

But today, I am going to tell you my thoughts on weight loss, and the two reason why most people (according to me) are not losing weight, and why they fail to stay fit and fail to stop gaining weight.

Are you ready?

My Thoughts on Weight loss

To be honest with you, I don’t believe that losing weight is really a diet. You just can’t do something very differently for a few months, loose a lot of weight and then go back to your life and expect to stay fit forever. To me, a diet, is something you do for a few months. You do things differently, after the diet, you go back to your normal life and hope to stay fit (as fit as you were when you finished the diet).

My thoughts might not be what you are expecting them to be, they are really simple, and you probably know all about them from before. But if you think about it, isn’t this what it’s all about?

In order to lose weight, you need to do someting about the following:

1. Portion control
2. Food and emotions

Let me start with Portion control. One plate is really enough, and you don’t have to supersize it. Remember to use one medium / regular plate, and nothing more for every meal. Don’t eat more than what’s on your one plate. If you stick to this, you should be better than ok.

I think that the part where most people lack control are when they connect food with emotions. Let’s use myself as an example. It’s always great to tell you about my faults.

Every time I am watching a movie (it doesn’t matter if it’s on TV or I am at the movie theatre), I feel like eating candy. I am just hooked on candy while watching movies. The same thing happened a while ago when I was watching soccer on TV, it felt really good to eat potato chips during every game.

Some people eat ice cream every time they are sad (at least that’s what women do in movies), some people eat candy every weekend, because that’s when they are enjoying themselves. Some people are eating candy every time they have guests, because that’s the polite thing to do. Every time we celebrate something, we are eating cake… why is that?

There are all sorts of reasons why people eat candy or unhealthy food, just like me and my pizza. I am not eating it just because it tastes good, or because I need it to survive. I am eating it because it makes me feel good. I am enjoying myself while eating, and I am enjoying myself because I am eating pizza. Just the thought of pizza makes me smile.

So, if you really want to lose weight, you should disconnect food and your emotions. If you will start eating only because you need to eat (in order to survive), then you will be more than ok. It might sound like a very hard thing to accomplish, and it might be, I really don’t know… because I am still eating candy almost every time I am watching a movie.

Remember, those are just my thoughts.

What do you think?

This entry is part 1 of 4 in the series Why you should switch to a vegetarian diet

This article is the first part of series of articles about why you should switch to a vegetarian diet.

Other articles in this serie are:

- You are what you eat

I haven’t been a vegetarian for more than seven years. And I didn’t experience one of those immediate switches to become all vegetarian, to me, it was a process that developed over several years.

If you’ve eaten meat your whole life, switching to a vegetarian diet might be something that could be fairly difficult. I am not sure if you can relate it to trying to quit smoking, because I think that quitting to smoke might be even more difficult.

I think that the most important part when it comes to becoming all vegetarian is to consider the reason why you should stop eating meat. Most people have been eating meat their whole life, and the easiest part is to continue eating the way they have always been eating.

So, the question you should be asking yourself is…

Why switch now?

In fact, there are many reasons why you should decide to switch to a vegetarian diet. You might want to take a look at yourself in the mirror, even though I don’t know anything about you, I know this:

The majority of Americans are not at a healthy weight and this can be the number one reason for them to switch. It seems that more and more people, not only in the US, are becoming obese. Do you think vegetarians become obese? Well, they certainly can, but so far, I have never heard of or seen (even on TV) an obese vegetarian.

Now, aks yourself the following questions:

- Are you at a healthy weight?

- Do you feel good most of the time?

- Do you wake up energized? Or tired and sluggish?

- How is your overall health?

- Is your blood pressure in a healthy range?

- Are your cholesterol and blood sugar levels normal?

If you answer no to most of the questions, you should consider a switch (you don’t have to become a vegetarian in order to feel healthy). Many people actually feel worse after eating, that’s not how food is suppose to make you feel. Food should nourish and feed your body. It should leave you feeling refreshed and energized. The body is a machine and it needs good fuel.

As I just stated, most Americans (and a lot more people in other countries as well) are overweight and obese.  This is because they eat too much meat and too much fat.  Problems such as high blood sugar, Type II diabetes, high cholesterol and other health related problems are caused by their diet.

All of these problems can be prevented by changing your diet.

You can become a vegetarian because of health related issues, as I  just described, but if you are like me, health got nothing to do with the switch. I will update you soon, with the reasons for why I became a vegetarian, and why I will continue to be one for the rest of my life… stay tuned.

Weight loss is very much necessary in case you have gained a lot of weight. This is because gaining weight is the root cause of several types of disorders like high blood pressure, depression, high sugar levels and increase chances of heart attack. Your weight loss under such circumstances improves the condition of your body while extra weight affects you negatively as it poses a lot of health risks of view and also decreases your overall quality of life. Hence weight loss is extremely necessary to get back in shape and also prevent all the above mentioned health related disorders from happening in the future.

You should consult a doctor or a specialist who will guide you well on how to go about for weight loss. Your doctor will guide you and put you through a weight loss regime that you will have to follow strictly according the doctors guidelines. The method of treatment for weight loss differs from person to person. Once you begin your weight loss regime you should stick to it. Many people show a lot of enthusiasm in the beginning in the weight loss programs but gradually lose all interest. Also timely weight loss will help you in maintaining your figure.

In order to go for weight loss you should know what to eat and when to eat. Also it is necessary to follow an exercise regime as a combination of exercise and diet to help you in a quick weight loss. Many people have a wrong notion that in order to have weight loss one should eat less food. The secret to getting a weight loss is to just avoid fatty foods like cheese, butter, oily foods etc. You should adopt a healthy diet consisting of salads, fruits and vegetables that will keep your stomach full and at the same time help in your weight loss program.

Remember to pursue the path to weight loss seriously. Ask yourself whether you will be able to follow the weight loss regime and for how much time will you follow it. It is not so difficult; you just have to keep yourself motivated. The bottom line is that weight loss is neither very easy nor very difficult. Its just a matter of how serious you are about your weight loss that matters. But if you follow the doctor’s or the dietician’s instructions carefully and regularly then you’ll surely lose weight quickly. Remember not to starve yourself for weight loss. Starving yourself will just add to your woes as you will feel hungrier and that way you tend to eat even more than you normally do.

Many people often ask the dietician as to what should be the ideal weight for them. An ideal weight that a person should have depends on his height and his body mass. A BMI also known as the Body Mass Index is one of the most commonly used tools to check whether your weight is in the ideal weight range or not.

There are many sites on the internet, especially health sites that have their own free BMI calculator. All you have to do is enter your height in inches or centimeters and your weight in kilograms or pounds and the BMI will calculate your body mass index and your ideal weight range. You can then look up the chart to check whether you have the ideal weight or whether you are overweight or underweight.

Efforts should then be made to maintain an ideal weight especially if you are overweight. Obesity or more weight may lead to complications like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart stoke and gout problems. The main causes of obesity are lack of physical activities and exercise and also not following an ideal diet. Remember that what you eat greatly affects your chances of achieving ideal weight. Foods that are high in calorie and fat content are very harmful for the body. Hence foods that are rich in vitamins and less in sugar and fat content should be eaten regularly. Desserts, confectionaries, cakes and pastries should be avoided as far as possible to maintain ideal weight.

If you are motivated to maintain an ideal weight then you will lose excess weight faster. Seek motivation from your friends and family members. Seek regular advice from your dietician. You will be amazed after seeing the positive results just after one week of following an ideal weight loss program. There are millions of people all around the world who would like to maintain ideal weight but are unable to do so because they give up easily and find it difficult to put in the efforts required to achieve ideal weight.

Proper exercise should also not be left behind to maintain an ideal weight. One can start with light exercises like walking, cycling and swimming and then move on to heavier exercises like weight lifting and weight training to get an ideal weight and also maintain that ideal weight. Doing exercises will not only burn your fat and calories but also keep your body healthy and fit. You will feel more confident and active after everyone compliments you for your body and ideal weight. Remember that maintaining an ideal weight is more difficult than losing weight.

This entry is part 4 of 4 in the series Why you should switch to a vegetarian diet

As a vegetarian, I have been thinking about why humans started eating meat in the first place. This question is interesting, because originally, our ancestors were hunter-gatherers and not omnivores.

It’s said that necessity is the mother of invention, and prehistoric humans who lived in frozen areas ate anything that they could to survive.  What I am saying is that, the prehistoric man had to eat meat in order to survive.  This would be the first time that they had ever eaten meat. And because of this, it changed the way people would eat forever.

The first meat that was eaten would have been cooked by fire that was natural started by natural forest fires.  Without fire, they could have possibly eaten raw meat as well.  The digestive system most likely rebelled to eating the raw meat, but as they became adjusted meat became a part of their regular diets.

You may have heard of people who have lived vegetarian lives for a long period of time and then became violently ill after eating meat.  This is similar to what prehistoric men would have gone through.

We are not really designed to digest meat, but we have adapted to it over time.

Weight watchers do prefer their own recipes which help them to lose weight more quickly. The recipes that are preferred by weight watchers and also good for those people who would like to take up a weight loss seriously is popularly known as weight watcher recipes. There are hundreds of weight watcher recipes available for people.

The weight watchers recipes can be customized according to the case of the person who would like to lose weight. Also if a person does not like a particular weight watcher recipe then he can get it modified with the help of a dietician. The dietician can suggest a suitable alternative weight watcher recipe.

Most of the weight watcher recipes stress on a few basic rules that we will discuss here. Every weight watcher recipe stresses that you should not starve yourself to lose weight.
