We all want to look fit, feel fit, and stay fit. It’s hard to accomplish it, and it’s even harder to lose weight.

There are probably many reasons why people are not losing weight and many people are gaining weight instead of losing it. The main reasons are that people are eating too much unhealthy food, too much junk food, and they are not exercising enough.

But today, I am going to tell you my thoughts on weight loss, and the two reason why most people (according to me) are not losing weight, and why they fail to stay fit and fail to stop gaining weight.

Are you ready?

My Thoughts on Weight loss

To be honest with you, I don’t believe that losing weight is really a diet. You just can’t do something very differently for a few months, loose a lot of weight and then go back to your life and expect to stay fit forever. To me, a diet, is something you do for a few months. You do things differently, after the diet, you go back to your normal life and hope to stay fit (as fit as you were when you finished the diet).

My thoughts might not be what you are expecting them to be, they are really simple, and you probably know all about them from before. But if you think about it, isn’t this what it’s all about?

In order to lose weight, you need to do someting about the following:

1. Portion control
2. Food and emotions

Let me start with Portion control. One plate is really enough, and you don’t have to supersize it. Remember to use one medium / regular plate, and nothing more for every meal. Don’t eat more than what’s on your one plate. If you stick to this, you should be better than ok.

I think that the part where most people lack control are when they connect food with emotions. Let’s use myself as an example. It’s always great to tell you about my faults.

Every time I am watching a movie (it doesn’t matter if it’s on TV or I am at the movie theatre), I feel like eating candy. I am just hooked on candy while watching movies. The same thing happened a while ago when I was watching soccer on TV, it felt really good to eat potato chips during every game.

Some people eat ice cream every time they are sad (at least that’s what women do in movies), some people eat candy every weekend, because that’s when they are enjoying themselves. Some people are eating candy every time they have guests, because that’s the polite thing to do. Every time we celebrate something, we are eating cake… why is that?

There are all sorts of reasons why people eat candy or unhealthy food, just like me and my pizza. I am not eating it just because it tastes good, or because I need it to survive. I am eating it because it makes me feel good. I am enjoying myself while eating, and I am enjoying myself because I am eating pizza. Just the thought of pizza makes me smile.

So, if you really want to lose weight, you should disconnect food and your emotions. If you will start eating only because you need to eat (in order to survive), then you will be more than ok. It might sound like a very hard thing to accomplish, and it might be, I really don’t know… because I am still eating candy almost every time I am watching a movie.

Remember, those are just my thoughts.

What do you think?

At the moment, I am with my family in small village fairly close to Alesund (west-coast of Norway). We’ve been here for four days, and we are having an awesome time.

The weather is nice, and the nature is fantastic. This is not our first time here though, but I never get used to the nature. The huge mountains, the sea and the fjords. It’s just amazing.

What’s not quite as amazing, is the choice of food for vegetarians.

We drove from Lillehammer to this village close to Alesund, and we stopped at three restaurants (well, not sure if I should call all three of them restaurants, but the point is; we could buy and eat food at all three places).

Not one of the three “restaurants” had any specific food for vegetarians. They had salads (even the salads was for non-vegetarians), and I could have eaten pizza, if we had stopped at another restaurant I spotted along the road. I ended up eating a more or less successful meal.

Yesterday, my family and I spent the day in Alesund. We went to the Aquarium (Atlanterhavsparken) and we spent a few hours in the central area of Alesund. At the end of the day, we stopped at another interesting restaurant. They served marvelous food, but the only food they had for vegetarians were french fries.

You probably guessed it. I didn’t eat much during our trip.

I understand why most restaurants in Norway don’t have specific meals for vegetarians. That’s probably because they don’t get many customers like me,, and it’s all about the money. But when I think about it, I get a little frustrated. Not because I was hungry and wanted something to eat, but because I think about the animals.

This entry is part 3 of 4 in the series Why you should switch to a vegetarian diet

After being a vegetarian for a while, you start questioning society and you start thinking about the future and the past. At least, that’s what I have been doing.

Among the things I have been thinking about and questioning, is what our ancestors ate and how far we have changed our eating habits.

Let me tell you what I have discovered.

Originally, our ancestors were hunter-gatherers and not omnivores. They did not eat animals (omnivore is a person that eats food of both plant and animal origin).  When you look at predators and carnivorous animals you can see that they have teeth designed to rip and tear.  Their teeth are not designed for chewing.  Animals that are designed for chewing like herbivores (an animal that feeds on plants) have flat teeth that are designed to breakdown food.

Humans have evolved

Humans evolved from being vegetarian.  ”Our” digestive systems were not designed for eating and digesting meat. Eating meat is a fairly recent development in human history.  It’s believed that people began to eat meat because they couldn’t find the natural foods they were used to eating.

Initially, we were similar to creatures that evolved from animals like herbivore apes.  These apes looked similar to us and walked upright with their arms and hands.  They naturally search widely for food and ate roots, berries, fruits and nuts. They also lived moment to moment constantly searching for food.

Hunting requires thought and eating meat required fire.  Until fire was discovered, humans primarily ate vegetables and fruits.

Weight loss is very much necessary in case you have gained a lot of weight. This is because gaining weight is the root cause of several types of disorders like high blood pressure, depression, high sugar levels and increase chances of heart attack. Your weight loss under such circumstances improves the condition of your body while extra weight affects you negatively as it poses a lot of health risks of view and also decreases your overall quality of life. Hence weight loss is extremely necessary to get back in shape and also prevent all the above mentioned health related disorders from happening in the future.

You should consult a doctor or a specialist who will guide you well on how to go about for weight loss. Your doctor will guide you and put you through a weight loss regime that you will have to follow strictly according the doctors guidelines. The method of treatment for weight loss differs from person to person. Once you begin your weight loss regime you should stick to it. Many people show a lot of enthusiasm in the beginning in the weight loss programs but gradually lose all interest. Also timely weight loss will help you in maintaining your figure.

In order to go for weight loss you should know what to eat and when to eat. Also it is necessary to follow an exercise regime as a combination of exercise and diet to help you in a quick weight loss. Many people have a wrong notion that in order to have weight loss one should eat less food. The secret to getting a weight loss is to just avoid fatty foods like cheese, butter, oily foods etc. You should adopt a healthy diet consisting of salads, fruits and vegetables that will keep your stomach full and at the same time help in your weight loss program.

Remember to pursue the path to weight loss seriously. Ask yourself whether you will be able to follow the weight loss regime and for how much time will you follow it. It is not so difficult; you just have to keep yourself motivated. The bottom line is that weight loss is neither very easy nor very difficult. Its just a matter of how serious you are about your weight loss that matters. But if you follow the doctor’s or the dietician’s instructions carefully and regularly then you’ll surely lose weight quickly. Remember not to starve yourself for weight loss. Starving yourself will just add to your woes as you will feel hungrier and that way you tend to eat even more than you normally do.

Sometimes, at least when it comes to food, being a vegetarian, I wish I’d live someplace other than Norway. It’s hard to get the right ingredients to be able to make vegetarian food, and it’s close to impossible to buy great vegetarian fast food.

I love burgers, and I try to make my own vegetarian burgers from black beans. They are ok, but not as tasty as the ones I have bought at places outside of Norway.

My favorite fast food burgers is from Quorn. They make their burgers from mushrooms. I buy them fairly cheap in Sweden, not too far from my home. They taste delicious.

But as I said, I’d really like to be able to buy some of the other burgers that I’ve heard so many good things about.

The top six vegetarian burgers I’d really like to taste are (in no particular order):

1. Boca Burgers
2. Amy’s Veggie Burgers
3. Gardenburger
4. Morningstar burgers
5. Lightlife burgers
6. Yves burgers

Have you tasted any of the burgers?

My kids love pancakes, and yesterday I promised them that we would have pancakes for dinner. They were thrilled.

The only problem when it comes to pancakes is that it’s not really that healthy.

I got a tip from a colleague of mine that told me about oatmeal pancakes. She said that they taste great, and you get more food in each pancake, and it’s healthier.

I decided to give it a try. This is a similar recipe to the one I used (except for the peanut oil and the baking powder).

My kids still loves pancakes, even when I included oatmeal (of course, I didn’t tell them that I included oatmeal). My wife loved the pancakes (I told her about the oatmeal after she said that she loved them). And I think that from now on, I’ll include oatmeal in all our pancakes.
